The history of Riccione

Here are some interesting facts about the birth of what later became the most popular tourist resort on the Adriatic Riviera.

Our city dates back to Roman times when it was called Arcione and was an important stopping point on the Via Flaminia, near the most important center of Rimini.

In 1260, following the setting up of an old Florentine family, the Agolanti, Riccione became a medieval village, whose ruins still are visitable. As like the picturesque Castle of Agolanti situated up the hills.

In ‘800 after the building of the railway Bologna-Ancona line, Riccione has had its first flow of tourists, who mostly were riches gentlemen from Bologna, they used to choose Riccione as the best place to buy their second home. Riccione beaches became very popular and the it has had its first elegant villas and residences.

Since ‘800 onwards Riccione life began to rise up each and every year: Mary Boorman Ceccarini financed the building of the Port Harbour, as well as the hospital named on her husband John Ceccarini and the school children, that still bears his name. These are just a little of the many social works that this illustrious benefactor women had donated to the city. Riccione is also the city where Mussolini had bought his Villa in 1934, which is actually a museum.

The highest rise up of tourism in Riccione had been in the ’30 years, when the city hosted up an average of 30,000 tourists per year, and more than 80 hotels were slowly replacing the sumptuous villas surrounded by greenery.
